The European Commission recognizes the importance of promoting cross-border tourism activities through the development of tourism for seniors in the off season.
Therefore, the "Tourism for Seniors" initiative was launched in 2012 May set as a pilot initiative to provide context for an improvement of seniors traveling in Europe.
The proportion of elderly people in the European tourism industry is significant and should be increased to counter the problem of seasonality, while promoting economic growth and job creation in Europe. Seniors (55 years old) make up about 25% of the European population. This population is made up of people who have same purchasing power and Leisure (insbesonderein the retirement period), and thus represents a considerable commercial market potential. It fits in some existing national and / or regional models with possible transferability at EU level.
The first call for projects, the EU facilitate cross-border tourism flows for seniors in the off-season was released June 2013.
4 projects were selected for co-financing. The projects will start in September 2014 and run for a period of 18 months.
